Potomac River at Wisconsin Avenue (01647600)

Why monitor streams?

“The streamgages on the Potomac River are crucial to Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts. The only way to determine the amount of pollution flowing to the Bay is to know the concentration of the pollution and the amount of water flowing to the Bay.” Robert Hirsch, USGS

USGS streamgage data are used to study:

•floods
•droughts
•stormwater management
•stream restoration
•tidal monitoring
•climate change
•water resource and water supply assessments
•bridge design
•reservoir operations
•water quality
•in-stream flows for habitats,
•navigation, and
•recreational safety

Who uses USGS streamflow data?

Users of USGS streamgage data include federal, state and local governments, consultants and engineering firms, universities, and interested citizens such as fishermen, kayakers, and boaters.
