6. Potomac River at Chain Bridge at Washington, DC (Station 01646580)

This station is located just upstream of the head of tide on the Potomac River, which provides drinking-water to millions of people in the Washington, DC area, and is the second-largest tributary to Chesapeake Bay. The upstream watershed includes a great diversity of land-use and geologic settings in an 11,600-square-mile watershed covering parts of four states (Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia). USGS samples for nutrients at this site date at least to the 1970s; NAWQA sampling began in 1993 and is continuing at present.
