5. Pocomoke River near Willards, MD (Station 01485000)

The Pocomoke River is located in a fairly unique hydrogeologic setting within the Atlantic Coastal Plain on the predominantly agricultural Delmarva Peninsula. Although soils in the watershed are fairly sandy, surface drainage is poor because the land is extremely flat and low-lying. Artificial ditching is used to promote agriculture throughout the watershed. The stream was selected to represent effects of agriculture (primarily corn and poultry production) in such settings. Hydrogeologic investigations as part of NAWQA and other USGS programs began in the watershed in the late 1980s; NAWQA sampling of the Pocomoke River was conducted between 1999 and 2001.
