The USGS Web camera at the Conowingo Hydroelectric Plant is no longer operational. All photos taken since July 1, 2001 are available in our Photo Archive. A photo gallery containing a few photos taken while installing the camera is also available.
To obtain the current hydrologic conditions of the discharge of the dam, please go to the real-time page for USGS Station #: 01578310 -- Susquehanna River at Conowingo, MD. If you would like to know more about the Conowingo Hydroelectric Plant, you can visit the web site of Exelon Power Corp., owners of the dam. ThinkQuest.org also has a virtual tour of the dam available.
This image shows the location of the webcam along the dam. The equipment used in this installation is an Axis 200+ web camera and a US Robotics external modem contained in a weather-proof fiberglass enclosure. The camera is pointing downstream and angled in the direction of the rocks on the right side of the image. The blue shed under the Web camera is the shed that stores all of the USGS stream gaging and Real-Time data equipment.
The images are downloaded hourly on the half-hour from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM. The schedule will change slightly with the seasons to compensate for the changes in sunrise and sunset times. Due to the angle of the camera, early morning photos are taken in the direction of the sunrise and may have a loss in image quality due to sun glare.
