White Sands Missile Range

Project Start Date: 01-January-1994
Project End Date: 30-September-2008

Partners
U.S. Army Garrison White Sands, Info. Mngt. West - White Sands Missile - Pub. Works - Business & Programs, Dept. of the Army

Chiefs/Leaders:
Gebhardt, Fredrick E.

Objectives

  1. Collect geohydrologic information from various sites throughout the missile range and surrounding areas.
  2. Obtain water-level and pumpage data so Groundwater depletion can be evaluated.
  3. Conduct short-term site studies where additional water supplies are needed.
  4. Provide geohydrologic information to various military projects so the missile range can prepare environmental impact statements.
  5. Provide monitoring data to the Army in order to satisfy regulatory requirements.

Statement of Problem

Because the volume of fresh Groundwater on the White Sands Missile Range is limited, the effects of pumpage in various well fields, such as depletion of fresh Groundwater and possible saline-water encroachment, need to be monitored. Various military projects and activities could have an environmental impact on surface water and Groundwater.

Strategy and Approach

Monitor water levels semiannually in supply wells, test wells, and boreholes throughout the White Sands Missile Range. Monitor the chemical quality of water in selected wells throughout the missile range. Evaluate the water resources of new and existing areas. Advise and assist the missile range with geohydrological problems and projects.
