A synoptic survey of water quality in major tributaries of the Potomac River was conducted in early June 1994. A single streamwater sample was collected from 22 tributaries of the Potomac River, and the Potomac River at Chain Bridge at Washington, D.C. The timeframe was selected to follow spring high streamflow conditions and the period of most intensive application of agricultural chemicals. These conditions were expected to result in high detection rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and pesticides in streamwater.
