Water-Quality Assessment of the Potomac River Basin:
Water-Quality and Selected Spatial Data, 1992-96
Streamwater data --
Indicator streams
Indicator streams drain small to intermediate sized watersheds, ranging from 14 to 300 square miles, with relatively homogeneous land use and geology. The South Fork South Branch Potomac River basin is underlain by siliciclastic rock and is dominated by forested land cover. The Muddy Creek basin is underlain by carbonate rock and is dominated by agricultural land use. Catoctin Creek's basin is underlain by crystalline rock and is dominated by agricultural land use. The Monocacy River basin is underlain by siliciclastic rock and is dominated by agricultural land use. Accotink Creek's basin is underlain by crystalline rock and is dominated by urban land use.
Streamwater was sampled monthly and during selected high streamflow events. In addition, streamwater was sampled weekly during a single growing season at Monocacy River, Muddy Creek, and Accotink Creek. Samples were analyzed for a wide range of analytes including suspended sediment, major inorganics, nutrients, gross organics and pesticides. Fish communities and stream habitat were also sampled.
