The Great Valley Carbonate is a broad, flat region underlain by limestone and dolomite with numerous sinkholes and caverns. The predominant land use is agriculture including row crops (corn, wheat, barley, soybeans, and oats), pasture (including hay and alfalfa), orchards (apples and peaches), dairy, and poultry operations. A network of 27 domestic supply wells were sampled in the summer of 2002 to determine occurrence, spatial distribution, and trends in water quality in the relatively shallow ground water and to relate ground-water chemistry to land use. Two additional wells were sampled for water quality in predominantly forested areas of the region (R1 and R2).
