Location - Lat. 39° 28' 18", long. 76° 49' 02", Baltimore County, Hydrologic Unit 02060003, on left bank, 375 ft. downstream of bridge on Chatsworth Avenue, 125 ft. off Wabash Avenue, in the town of Glyndon, and 0.9 mile northeast of Reisterstown.

Gaging station may be reached from intersection of MD-128 (Butler Road) and Worthington Avenue as follows:

  • Butler Road ends at a T-intersection which is a continuation of MD-128 to the right and Worthington Avenue to the left. From Butler Road at the T-intersection, turn right onto MD-128.
  • Follow MD-128 approximately 0.8 mile to a railroad overpass. Just beyond the railroad overpass, turn left onto Wabash Avenue.
  • Follow Wabash Avenue approximately 0.3 mile until it dead ends at a gated, fenced-in area. Pull van onto grass area on the right. Walk approximately 125 feet into grass area off the road to streambank. Turn left and walk downstream approximately 50 feet to gage on left bank.

Drainage Area - 0.32 square miles (measured on USGS topographic maps).

Gage - Steel shelter mounted on 3" diameter, schedule 80, riser pipe. 3" pipe is connected to a 6-foot length of 2" diameter, schedule 80 pipe by a 3" to 2" reducing tee. The 2" pipe runs under the left bank and extends into the stream. A PVC static tube is attached at the end of the 2" pipe.

Equipment - Sutron 8400 electronic stage recorder (15 min. scan interval), with stage kit.


Staff gage
Outside gage is a vertical enameled staff (0.00 - 3.34 ft.) attached to a vertical section of 6" x 6" pressure-treated lumber that is set in concrete at the base of the left bank.

A standard USGS crest-stage gage is attached to the side of 6" x 6" outside-gage backing.

  1. No stream gages have previously been operated in the headwater area of Gwynns Falls.

Control - Low-water control is a 6 ft. x 2 ft. x 2 inch thick wooden weir with a broad-crested V-notch in the center.

Discharge Measurements -

Floods - Flood of July 22, 1999 reached a recorded stage of 3.25 ft. Flood of August 26, 1999 reached a recorded stage of 3.59 ft.

Point of Zero Flow - 0.56 ft (based on observation of staff gage and weir during gage installation

Winter Records - Stage-discharge relation can be affected by ice during periods of extended cold.

Regulation - None.

Diversion - None.

Accuracy - Good to fair records should be obtained.
